Competition for the Dome

The Opera del Duomo opened a competition in 1418 to design and build the dome of the Cathedral, after the rest was already built. Filippo Brunelleschi won the competition, although he was an amateur and had had no experience or training in architecture. His design was genius, and scientists today are still dumfounded how he could have come up with the design without any former training. The construction of the dome began in 1420, and was finished in 1420 itself. The dome is called Brunelleschi’s dome.
